As a Snow Shoveler at the University of Guelph, you will play a crucial role in ensuring campus safety and accessibility during winter weather conditions. Your primary responsibilities will include:
Manual Snow Removal: Using shovels and other appropriate tools, you will clear snow from designated pathways, sidewalks, and parking lots on campus. This may involve removing snow from steps, ramps, and other areas that present potential hazards.
Ice Melter Application: To prevent icy conditions and ensure safe passage for students, faculty, and staff, you will spread ice melter on slippery surfaces. This requires careful judgment to determine the appropriate amount of ice melter to use and to avoid excessive application that could damage surfaces or harm the environment.
Preparatory Tasks: In anticipation of snow events, you may be involved in preparatory tasks such as preparing equipment, checking snow removal routes, and assisting with other winter maintenance activities.
Adherence to Safety Guidelines: Your work will involve operating in potentially hazardous conditions, such as slippery surfaces and cold temperatures. It is essential to follow all safety guidelines and wear appropriate protective gear to minimize the risk of injuries.
To be successful in this role, you must possess the following qualities:
Reliability: You must be dependable and punctual, especially during snow events when your presence is crucial.
Teamwork: The ability to work effectively as part of a team is essential, as you will often collaborate with other snow shovelers to clear large areas efficiently.
Individual Initiative: You should also be able to work independently and take initiative to identify and address potential hazards.
Communication Skills: Clear and effective communication is vital for coordinating with other team members, reporting any issues or concerns, and following instructions.
Physical Fitness: This position requires physical stamina and endurance, as you will be engaged in physically demanding tasks for extended periods, often in cold weather conditions.
Adaptability: You must be able to adapt to changing weather conditions and work schedules, as your availability may vary depending on the severity of snowstorms.
The typical workday for a Snow Shoveler begins at 6:00 AM. However, during significant snow events, you may be called in as early as 2:30 AM. The actual availability of work will depend on the weather conditions and the severity of snowstorms.
